DESCRIPTION:Spring Lecture #1: Penn's Woods Over Time: Native Americans to the Civilian Conservation Corps: Cultural and Historical Resources in Michaux State Forest Presented by Claire Jantz\, Chair of the Friends of Michaux State Forest\; Professor\, Department of Geography/Earth Science\, Shippensburg University. This talk will give a broad history of Michaux State Forest with a focus on how humans have used the resources there from the mining of rhyolite by Native Americans\, to the era of the iron and timber industries\, to the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. There will be an emphasis on how the cultural history of Michaux State Forest can be seen and understood in the contemporary landscape. Participants will also learn how and why Michaux State Forest was established and its importance as Pennsylvania's "cradle of forestry."
